60% of terminally ill patients in the Ternopil Region need narcotic pain relief

The problem of patients' access to quality pain relief was discussed by Ternopil doctors during a seminar on the circulation of narcotic substances in the medical field. As Larisa Matyuk , the chief specialist-therapist of the health care department of the regional state administration  , reported, an incurable disease should not lead to a deterioration of a person's quality of life. Considering the fact that 60% of incurable patients need the services of this branch of medicine, more and more attention is paid to modern methods of pain relief and care for such patients all over the world.

According to the definition of WHO, palliative care is a comprehensive approach that should ensure the maximum quality of life of a patient with an incurable disease.

As the director of the training center of the regional center of palliative care of the Ivano-Frankivsk region Lyudmila Andriyshyn emphasized , there should be no reservations about morphine and other opioid analgesics, if it concerns terminally ill patients. And in general, painkillers must be correctly combined to ensure reliable analgesia and not increase the suffering of a person at the last stage of the disease.
